English 11 is a two-semester course designed to develop 21st Century literacy skills through reading, writing, speaking, listening and technology. Students focus on a variety of literary genres created by American authors from the 1400s to current day.
Course Literature:
- American Literature
- Literature and the Language Arts: The American Tradition
- The Crucible by Arthur Miller
- The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain
- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Selected short Nonfiction pieces
- 20 Things That Matter by Hal Urban
Be Prepared:
- Your laptop, charged! Bring your power cord
- Pen or pencil
- Paper for daily writing
- Folder space dedicated to this class to keep work organized
Online Class Access:
- A class website is on Canvas for all assignments
- Students and parents may access my Canvas site 24/7
Essays: Literary Analysis, Persuasive, Research, Personal Narrative
Goals:
- Experience American literature in historical context
- Develop reading strategies
- Evaluate and analyze authors’ techniques
- Comprehend and apply literary terms and reading vocabulary
- Write to comprehend, analyze, synthesize and evaluate
- Improve writing process using technology
- Improve speaking and listening skills in small and large groups
- Participate in ACT test preparation
Classroom Expectations/Policies:
- Keep it simple: Work hard. Be nice. Be here every day!
- The LHS tardy and absence policy, as well as all district handbook rules, will be followed.
- Cell phones need to be put away during class time.
- Headphone music may be used at times depending on work activities.
- Drinks are welcome if capped and used responsibly. No food!
Grades: Grades are based on class participation, daily writing assignments, homework, quizzes, tests, essays. Little or no extra credit is offered.
A= 100% - 90%
B= 89% - 80%
C= 79% - 70%
D= 69% - 60%
F= 59% - 0%
Late work accepted for the partial credit of 60% of the grade.
Cheating, plagiarism, copying homework, signature forgery, will result in a grade of zero for all involved. Plagiarized assignments may be re-worked.
Turnitin.com: All essays will be submitted to Turnitin.com to address plagiarism. Essays not submitted to Turnitin.com will earn a zero.
