COURSE DESCRIPTION
This class is designed to give students an awareness to be health literate. Functions of human body systems will be reviewed. Health components such as personal health habits, nutrition and stress management will be studied. Prevention and control of disease will be covered. Health risk factors such as violence and substance abuse will be examined. Students will be able to develop a fitness program, cover mental illnesses, and be aware of the media in today’s society. Students will be able to develop a Public Service Announcement, gain more knowledge about the Food and Drug Administration. We will also cover various types of cancer and causes, different genres of drugs and the effects on the human body as well as society, prescription drugs, and the effects of alcohol.

Grades will be determined on a point basis utilizing the following assessments:

Assignments will be due on Wednesdays and Sundays. Pay close attention to due dates on the Canvas calendar. It is expected that you check in on Canvas EVERY DAY. Stay up to date on the assignments. Getting behind is not advised as this is a whole semester of work in one month.
There is an experiential learning component to this course. Please look at that assignment and make arrangements to work on it through the month. The due date is at the end of the course, but this can be turned in anytime.
COURSE OBJECTIVES (Each course at the secondary level has many different objectives.)
The student will…
- Learn that personal health behaviors can have both short and long term consequences on the function of human body systems.
- Students will learn the key components of Nutrition, dealing with micro-nutrients and macro-nutrients.
- 6 components of health will be discussed and evaluated. We will learn how to assess the components and how to improve the components.
- Learn that many factors must be considered in family planning and that teen parenting and pregnancy should be examined from the personal, family, and societal perspectives.
- Learn that key nutrients perform specific functions and influence body compositions.
- Learn that some advertising is designed to appease to the emotions of consumers and may contribute to unhealthy behaviors.
- Learn that life management skills can help young adults in planning for their future and addressing personal and social concerns that are part of daily living such as learn to manage time and stress, deal with conflicts, work collaboratively, make reasoned and informed decisions and set goals.
- Learn that Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDS) have signs and symptoms that indicate abnormalities with the reproductive system. Some STDs have few signs and symptoms until the disease has progressed and can cause permanent complications for body systems.
- Learn that abstinence is the best method for preventing STDs and teen pregnancy.
- Learn that self-examinations and being aware of cancer signs and symptoms aid in early detection and treatment, as treatments will be reviewed, as well as causes of cancer.
- Learn that engaging in risk behaviors as a young adult can contribute to the development of chronic disease.
- Learn that societal problems affecting teens includes rape, assault, homicide and other personal safety risks. Assessing, preventing or minimizing one’s risks are important strategies to learn for self-protection.
- Learn that wellness refers to the quality of life involving the interactions of all six components of the individual.
- Learn how to develop a Public Service Announcement (PSA) and its purpose.
- Gain a better understanding of what the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does.
- Be able to identify mental disorders, their symptoms, and treatments.
- The student will gain a better understanding of the effects a depressant, stimulant, hallucinogen have on the body when consumed.
