 Journalism 1 is a one-semester course designed to develop the art and craft of all aspects of professional journalism. This will include foundational journalism standards that may be applied to print, online, social media platforms and broadcast. Students who master the material may apply to the LHS newspaper, yearbook or beginning broadcast for the following school year.

Class Supplies:                    

  • Laptop and power cord
  • Writing utensils
  • Notebook in which to organize class materials

Learning Goals:

  • To become an advanced consumer of news via electronic and print media
  • To practice skills as a writer of news, features and commentaries
  • To learn and apply legal standards
  • To explore and apply ethical decision-making models
  • To be organized and manage deadlines effectively

Classroom Policies:

  1. Work hard. Be nice. Be curious.
  2. Cell phones may not be used to socialize, but may be used for research or interviewing.
  3. All rules in the LHS Student Handbook will be followed. Read the rules! 
  4. Caution! No Plagiarism in writing or forgery of signatures: results in a zero.

Grading:

Graded work will include all aspects of journalism:

  1. Reporting and story writing
  2. Reporter research
  3. Small group legal and ethical discussions
  4. Copy-editing marks 
  5. News-reading Journal
  6. Portfolio final exam

Late work accepted until the day of the final exam for 60% credit.
